Haverford Basement, PA.
Project type
Interior Design / Design Consultation
Date
January, 2022.
Location
Haverford, PA.
Located within a historic Horace Trumbauer–designed mansion, this project transformed a flood‑damaged basement into a series of richly detailed, multifunctional spaces. The design reconciles historic gravitas with modern living, restoring classical character while introducing contemporary utility.
At the heart of the project is a bespoke library conceived as a quiet retreat. Deep green tones, tailored upholstery, and custom millwork establish a sumptuous, club‑like atmosphere. A concealed Murphy bed—designed to resemble a traditional card catalog—blends functionality with historic reference, allowing the space to transition seamlessly between private library and guest accommodation.
Furnishings were selected to evoke a vintage sensibility while remaining newly fabricated, reinforcing longevity and comfort. Personal collections and inherited artifacts were carefully integrated, lending narrative depth and authenticity to the space.
This basement renovation demonstrates a sensitive balance between heritage preservation, storytelling through objects, and contemporary comfort.
